The Kawachi Konda area is where many haniwa (hollow unglazed terracotta figures) were made in the Kofun period about 1,500 years ago.
Many Kofun (ancient burial mounds) stand around in the vicinity (e.g., the Ojin-tenno-ryo Kofun and Hakayama Kofun).
Okuraya approaches what mystery and interesting about the kofun and haniwa from various angles in a land where this history and culture is alive.

Kofun is a mounded tomb.
Haniwa are Terracotta objects made of fired clay and were lined up on Kofun.
Why don’t you make your own unique Haniwa?
We welcome everyone – from individuals to groups!
Even children can enjoy this experience with the sense of playing with clay.
You can take the made haniwa home on the day, but it takes approx. 90 min. to complete dry and firing processes for handover after you make the haniwa.
We cannot guarantee damage.

The firing fee for one haniwa is included in the price, but if you wish to make a second piece, an additional firing fee of 550 yen will be charged separately.
A maximum of two pieces can be made per person.

The Haniwa Lunch Box only available at Okuraya.
They are made with side dishes in the shape of haniwa and magatama (comma-shaped jewels), ancient rice in the form of zenpo-koenfun, seasonal ingredients, and fish that have been eaten since the Kofun period.
